A quick word of introduction...

“A man does not consist of memory alone. He has feeling, will, sensibility, moral being."
Oliver Sacks

The aim of this project is to develop a simple and practical toolbox to improve communication with people affected by the illness. Ultimately, by being accessible and tailored to each stakeholder, it aims to promote activity, communication, and creation of bonds.

The population suffering from dementia grows every year and is expected to reach 78 million by 2030. We all have someone in our close circle who struggles with these illnesses. Illness strikes unexpectedly, creating feelings of isolation, frustration, and diminishing the overall quality of life for the affected person as well as their loved ones.

In health, it is recognized that movement and social connections are essential for individuals to thrive. Various studies and initiatives emphasize the significance of how simple things such as exercises, taking a cup of coffee or maintaining social contact can help in reducing mental health issues and slowing down the process of chronic diseases. However, these seemingly straightforward activities become challenging for individuals with dementia.

Our ability to communicate is vitalwhatever our age, origin, gender or beliefs. It helps us to make decisions, receive information, express our emotions and define who we are to the people around us. It makes us exist as an individual within the society. It tells a story, the story of who we are.

The aim of this project is to develop a simple and practical toolkit to enhance communication with individuals affected by the disease. In the long term, by being accessible and tailored to each stakeholder, it aims to bridge the gap between society and the patient by promoting activity, communication, and ultimately fostering the creation of bonds.

From the viewpoint of healthcare providers, establishing strong connections with patients is crucial for a successful path towards improving their quality of life. Institutions need to prioritize accessibility. Lastly, the caregiver – often overlooked – who tirelessly looks after their loved ones day and night, searching for the best solutions. Despite their differences, communication remains the common thread among all these stakeholders. As a stakeholder, as a patient or as a loved one, you all have experiences, different and unique. And those experiences can help.
